Target Information
Histamine in mammals is metabolized via two major pathways:
- N(tau)-methylation through histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT)
- Oxidative deamination via diamine oxidase
HNMT functions in the cytosol, using S-adenosyl-L-methionine as the methyl donor. In the brain, histamine neurotransmitter activity is regulated by N(tau)-methylation, as diamine oxidase is absent in the central nervous system. A common genetic polymorphism can affect HNMT activity levels in red blood cells.
