Target Information
In mammals, histamine is metabolized by two major pathways: N(tau)-methylation via histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT) and oxidative deamination via diamine oxidase.
HNMT is a cytosolic enzyme that uses S-adenosyl-L-methionine as the methyl donor.
In the mammalian brain, histamine neurotransmitter activity is regulated by N(tau)-methylation since diamine oxidase is absent in the central nervous system.
A common genetic polymorphism affects HNMT activity levels in red blood cells.
