G protein-coupled receptor GPR49 (LGR5) is expressed in brain, skeletal muscle, placenta, and spinal cord. ESTs have been isolated from normal human brain (amygdala), embryo, and placenta libraries, as well as germ cell, uterus, and brain libraries.
GPCRs form one of the largest signaling molecule families with over a thousand members predicted. They share a structural motif of seven membrane-spanning helices and exist in active/inactive conformations. Ligand binding induces conformational changes leading to G-protein activation and downstream signaling.
