Target Information
This gene encodes a secreted, homodimeric glycoprotein expressed in various tissues, potentially functioning in autocrine or paracrine signaling. It contains a 5′ UTR rich in CAG repeats and 11 conserved cysteine residues. The protein is phosphorylated by protein kinase C on serine residues and may regulate calcium and phosphate transport, cell metabolism, and calcium/phosphate homeostasis. Overexpression in mice leads to elevated serum phosphate, dwarfism, and increased metabolic rate. Altered expression has been noted in hepatocellular, ovarian, and breast cancers.
