Target Information
Aconitase 1 (ACO1), also known as iron regulatory element binding protein 1 (IREB1), is a cytosolic protein that binds to iron-responsive elements (IREs) and plays a central role in cellular iron homeostasis. It also exhibits aconitase activity and belongs to the aconitase enzyme family.
IREs are stem-loop structures found in the 5' UTR of ferritin mRNA and the 3' UTR of transferrin receptor mRNA. Iron-induced binding to IREs represses translation of ferritin mRNA and prevents degradation of transferrin receptor mRNA, maintaining iron balance within cells.
