Target Information

Keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) is a large, heterogeneous glycosylated protein with subunits of 350,000–390,000 Da, forming aggregates of 4,500,000–13,000,000 Da. Each domain contains two copper atoms that bind oxygen, giving a transparent blue color when oxygenated. KLH is highly immunogenic and widely used as a carrier protein in research and biotechnology applications.
Haptens—small molecules such as peptides or drugs—require carrier proteins to elicit immune responses, and KLH is preferred due to its large size, abundant lysine residues, and phylogenetic distance from mammalian proteins, reducing false positives.
Although KLH tends to aggregate, which can complicate conjugation, aggregates remain immunogenic and usable in research.
