Target Information

The CDKN2A gene produces several transcript variants differing in their first exons.

• At least three alternatively spliced variants encode distinct proteins, two of which function as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase.
• Another transcript includes an alternate exon located 20 Kb upstream, encoding an ARF protein that stabilizes p53 by interacting with and sequestering MDM2.
  Despite structural differences, both CDK inhibitor isoforms and the ARF product regulate G1 cell cycle progression via CDK4 and p53 pathways.
  This gene is frequently mutated or deleted in diverse tumors and is a key tumor suppressor gene.
