Target Information
Nanos is a zinc-finger containing, RNA-binding protein involved in germ cell development in both invertebrates and vertebrates.
In Drosophila, Nanos represses apoptosis during development to ensure proper germ-line formation.
In mammals, Nanos2 and Nanos3 are essential for germ cell development, while Nanos1 is dispensable.
Nanos2-deficient primordial germ cells (PGCs) die only in male gonads, whereas Nanos3-deficient PGCs are lost during migration in both sexes.
Distinct expression patterns of Nanos2 and Nanos3 during embryogenesis suggest non-redundant functions, though Nanos2 expression can partially compensate for Nanos3 deficiency.
