Target Information
Protein kinases are enzymes that transfer a phosphate group from ATP to an acceptor amino acid in substrate proteins. Through this mechanism, they regulate signal transduction in eukaryotic cells, influencing metabolism, transcription, cell cycle, cytoskeletal organization, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The protein kinase family includes over 500 gene products, classified into eight major groups based on catalytic domain sequence similarity.
The STE group (homologs of yeast Sterile 7, 11, 20 kinases) comprises 50 kinases related to MAPK cascade families (Ste7/MAP2K, Ste11/MAP3K, Ste20/MAP4K). MAP kinase cascades are well characterized in yeast pheromone response pathways, where pheromones activate MAPK signaling via Ste surface receptors.
