Target Information
Human prion protein (PrP), also known as PRNP, is a GPI-anchored cell surface glycoprotein associated with lipid rafts and functions as a signaling molecule. PrP is involved in apoptosis, epithelial cell proliferation, and junction-associated protein distribution in enterocytes. Conversion of normal PrPc into the abnormal PrPSc conformer triggers prion neurodegenerative disorders such as Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD). PrPc is rich in alpha-helices, while PrPSc has higher beta-sheet content and is resistant to proteinase K.
