Target Information
Voltage-gated sodium channels (NaV) are essential for generating action potentials and maintaining cell excitability. These channels open in response to depolarization and selectively allow Na⁺ ion flow.
Nine NaV alpha subunits (NaV1.1–NaV1.9) have been cloned and are classified as TTX-sensitive (NaV1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.7) or TTX-resistant (NaV1.5, 1.8, 1.9).
Mammalian sodium channels are heterotrimers composed of one alpha subunit and two beta subunits. Expression of alpha isoforms is developmentally regulated and tissue-specific. In adults, CNS and heart channels contain beta 1–4 subunits, while skeletal muscle channels contain only beta 1.
