Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the large G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating odorant signal recognition and transduction.
