Cellular Localization Nucleus, Chromosome, Cytoplasm, Centrosome. Nuclear export mediated partly by XPO1/CRM1. Localizes to centrosome during interphase and protects CDC2 kinase from inappropriate activation by CDC25B. Proteolytic cleavage by SPRTN promotes removal from chromatin.

Background

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the Ser/Thr protein kinase family. It is required for checkpoint-mediated cell cycle arrest in response to DNA damage or unreplicated DNA. It integrates signals from ATM and ATR, key proteins in DNA damage responses, and associates with chromatin in meiotic prophase I. Phosphorylation of CDC25A by Chk1 is essential for delaying cell cycle progression following double-strand DNA breaks. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene (RefSeq, Oct 2011).
