Target Information

The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex composed of a 20S core and a 19S regulator. The 20S core has four rings of 28 non-identical subunits (two rings of 7 alpha and two rings of 7 beta subunits). The 19S regulator consists of a base with 6 ATPase subunits and 2 non-ATPase subunits, and a lid containing up to 10 non-ATPase subunits. Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides via an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway. The immunoproteasome, a modified form, processes class I MHC peptides and includes the 11S regulator (PA28), replacing the 19S regulator. This gene encodes the gamma subunit of the 11S regulator, forming a homohexameric ring. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
