Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by ABCB1 is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters.
ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes and are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This protein belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is involved in multidrug resistance.
The ABCB1 protein functions as an ATP-dependent drug efflux pump with broad substrate specificity, contributing to decreased drug accumulation in multidrug-resistant cells and mediating resistance to anticancer drugs.
It also acts as a transporter in the blood-brain barrier.
