This antibody reacts with human vimentin, a 57 kDa intermediate filament intracellular protein expressed on a wide variety of mesenchymal and mesodermal cell types.
Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is believed to be involved with intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin is expressed along with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis through its involvement in cholesterol-containing lipid droplet transport. Phosphorylation by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangements facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria, enhancing steroid synthesis.
