Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT family members are phosphorylated by receptor-associated kinases and form homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the nucleus to act as transcription activators.
STAT5b mediates signal transduction triggered by ligands such as IL2, IL4, CSF1, and various growth hormones. It is involved in processes including TCR signaling, apoptosis, mammary gland development, and liver gene expression regulation.
This gene can fuse with the retinoic acid receptor-alpha (RARA) gene in a subset of acute promyelocytic leukemias (APLL). Dysregulation of STAT5b-mediated signaling may contribute to APLL pathogenesis.
