Target Information
Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) is essential for cholesterol transport from the outer to the inner mitochondrial membrane. The 37 kDa precursor is cleaved into an active 28 kDa protein that facilitates cholesterol conversion into pregnenolone. StAR is predominantly expressed in mitochondria of steroid-producing adrenal and gonadal tissues. Mutations in the StAR gene are associated with Lipoid Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (LCAH), leading to defects in pregnenolone and cortisol synthesis. The precise mechanism of cholesterol binding to StAR remains under investigation.
