Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic activity, while the B subunits serve as carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists of two A subunits identical to those in plasma. Upon thrombin cleavage and calcium ion presence, the active enzyme factor XIIIa is formed, functioning as a transglutaminase to stabilize fibrin clots by crosslinking fibrin molecules and other substrates such as fibronectin and alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor. Factor XIII deficiency can cause bleeding disorders, poor wound healing, and recurrent miscarriage.
