Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer of two A subunits (catalytic) and two B subunits (carrier). Platelet factor XIII contains only A subunits. Upon thrombin activation in the presence of calcium ions, the B subunits dissociate, forming the active enzyme factor XIIIa. This enzyme functions as a transglutaminase, catalyzing crosslinking between fibrin molecules to stabilize the clot. It also crosslinks α2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin α chains. Factor XIII deficiency can be type I (absence of both A and B subunits) or type II (absence of A subunit only), leading to bleeding disorders, poor wound healing, and recurrent miscarriage.
