Target Information

The FXIIIA gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits (catalytic) and two B subunits (carrier). Platelet factor XIII consists of two A subunits identical to plasma origin. Upon thrombin cleavage and calcium ion presence, plasma factor XIII releases B subunits, forming active factor XIIIa. This enzyme catalyzes gamma-glutamyl-epsilon-lysine crosslinking between fibrin molecules, stabilizing clots, and also crosslinks alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin alpha chains. Factor XIII deficiency types:

  • Type I: Lack of both A and B subunits
  • Type II: Lack of A subunit only
Deficiency leads to bleeding tendency, poor wound healing, and habitual abortion.
