Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits (catalytic) and two B subunits (carrier). Platelet factor XIII contains only A subunits, identical to plasma-derived ones. Upon thrombin cleavage in the presence of calcium, the B subunits dissociate, forming the active enzyme factor XIIIa. This enzyme catalyzes crosslinking between fibrin molecules, stabilizing the clot, and also crosslinks alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin alpha chains. Factor XIII deficiency can cause bleeding tendency, poor wound healing, and habitual abortion.
