Target Information

The urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) regulates cell-surface plasminogen activation and plays an important role in normal and pathological processes.
Human PLAUR cDNA encodes 335 amino acids including a signal peptide of 22 residues and a hydrophobic C-terminal portion. It produces a highly glycosylated ~50 kD protein anchored to the plasma membrane via glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol linkage.

PLAUR (UPAR) associates with the carbohydrate-binding domain of SELL on neutrophil membranes, analogous to interactions with beta-2 integrins. PLAUR-mediated calcium mobilization is SELL dependent.
UPAR mRNA levels are correlated with the invasive potential of endometrial carcinomas, showing a 33-fold increase in advanced stages versus normal tissue. Protein expression correlates with recurrence and mortality rates, making UPAR a useful prognostic marker for advanced endometrial cancer.
