Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and regulation of epithelial layer formation. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor the E-cadherin complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with the adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in signaling pathways involving tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless.
In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors that regulate genes such as cyclin D and c-myc, promoting cell proliferation. Dysregulation of beta-catenin is implicated in various cancers including colorectal, ovarian, breast, liver, lung, gastric, prostate, and skin tumors.
