Target Information
Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors characterized by a conserved pattern of eight cysteine residues and shared VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.
VEGFB shares structural similarities with VEGF and PIGF and is often co-expressed with VEGF. There are two isoforms: VEGFB 167 (heparin-binding, cell-associated) and VEGFB 186 (secreted). VEGFB binds to VEGFR1 (flt1) but not VEGFR2. It is abundantly expressed in heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. VEGFB expression in human breast cancers has been linked to lymph node metastasis. The VEGFB gene is located on chromosome 11q13.
