MRPL42 encodes a mitochondrial ribosomal protein involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion.
Mammalian mitoribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes.
This gene product is associated with both subunits and exhibits species-specific sequence variations.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 4q, 6p, 6q, 7p, and 15q.
