Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. Aromatase localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and catalyzes the final steps of estrogen biosynthesis through three successive hydroxylations of the A ring of androgens. Mutations can lead to altered aromatase activity, affecting estrogen-related physiological processes. Two transcript variants are expressed.
