Target Information

The PAX gene family encodes transcription factors active in specific tissues during early embryonic development. Members of this family contain a paired box DNA-binding domain and regulate genetic programs essential for organogenesis.

  • PAX2 is expressed in developing kidney tissues, particularly in condensing metanephric mesenchyme and early epithelial structures.
  • Expression is downregulated as the renal tubular epithelium matures but persists in Wilms’ tumors, correlating with poorly differentiated epithelial proliferation.
  • Mutations or dysregulation of PAX genes are linked to developmental disorders such as Waardenburg syndrome (PAX3) and Aniridia (PAX6).
  • The Wilms’ tumor suppressor protein WT1 appears to repress PAX2 transcription during normal differentiation.
