Target Information
Protein p21 is a tumor suppressor protein that inhibits Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK) and is transcriptionally activated by p53.
It plays a crucial role in cellular response to genotoxic stress and DNA damage repair by blocking cell cycle progression (G1 to S phase or G2 to mitosis).
In the cytoplasm, p21 exhibits anti-apoptotic activity by inhibiting caspase 3 and apoptotic kinases ASK1 and JNK.
It shows dual functionality in carcinogenesis, acting both as a tumor suppressor and as an oncogene depending on cellular context.
