Target Information
Muscarinic cholinergic receptor 2 (CHRM2) is an acetylcholine receptor that may function as a presynaptic autoreceptor inhibiting acetylcholine release. The M2 receptor mediates smooth muscle contractility and is implicated in Alzheimer’s disease due to selective loss in cortical and hippocampal regions. Increased M2 receptor heterozygosity has been associated with depression in women. The M2 receptor is expressed in multiple brain regions including cerebellum, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, medulla, striatum, thalamus, and also in lung and prostate.
