Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors, which mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission. In addition, glutamate regulates enzymes producing second messengers via G-protein-coupled receptors known as metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs).
- Group I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5): Stimulate phospholipase C, increasing phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release.
- Group II and III receptors (including mGluR2, mGluR3): Inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity.
