Target Information
This gene encodes a single-pass type I membrane glycoprotein with two Ig-like C2-type domains and one Ig-like V-type domain. It is a component of adherens junctions in the plasma membrane and serves as an entry receptor for certain mutant strains of herpes simplex virus and pseudorabies virus. It also facilitates cell-to-cell viral spread. Variations in this gene have been linked to differences in the severity of multiple sclerosis. Alternate splice variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
