Target Information
Involucrin is a component of the keratinocyte crosslinked envelope, found in the cytoplasm and crosslinked to membrane proteins by transglutaminase. It is expressed in stratified squamous epithelia, including the cornea, and first appears in the upper spinous layers of normal epidermis. In keratinocyte cultures, it is expressed by all cells that have left the basal layer.
Abnormal expression of Involucrin is observed in squamous cell carcinomas and premalignant lesions, and reduced expression occurs in severe dysplasias of the larynx and cervix. The gene is mapped to chromosome 1q21, among calpactin I light chain, trichohyalin, profillaggrin, loricrin, and calcyclin.
