Target Information
The TEK receptor tyrosine kinase (also known as TIE2) is expressed almost exclusively in endothelial cells. TEK signaling is essential for endothelial cell–smooth muscle cell communication during venous morphogenesis, and defects in TEK are linked to inherited venous malformations.
Angiopoietin-1 binds to TEK and mediates a signaling pathway important for embryonic vascular development.
Immunoblotting studies show that TIE2 expression increases in response to thyroid-stimulating hormone and agents that elevate intracellular cAMP.
Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) expressing TIE2 are quiescent, antiapoptotic, and form a side population that adheres to osteoblasts in the bone marrow niche.
