Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO1 or MTCO1) is one of three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded subunits (MTCO1, MTCO2, MTCO3) of respiratory Complex IV.
Complex IV, located within the mitochondrial inner membrane, is the third and final enzyme of the electron transport chain in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. It consists of 13 polypeptides: subunits I–III (MTCO1–3) encoded by mtDNA, and subunits IV–VIII encoded by nuclear DNA.
The cytochrome c oxidase family of enzymes contains four redox centers (two hemes and two copper centers). In mitochondrial Complex IV, hemes a and a3 and copper center CuB are bound to subunit I.
Studies (Acin-Perez et al., 2003) have shown that mutations in the COX subunit I gene can affect enzyme function and mitochondrial respiratory efficiency.
