Beclin 1은 자가포식(autophagy)의 중심적 역할을 담당합니다. PI3K 복합체의 핵심 서브유닛으로 작용하며, phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate 형성을 매개합니다.
PI3KC3-C1 복합체는 오토파고좀의 개시(initiation)에, PI3KC3-C2 복합체는 오토파고좀의 성숙(maturation) 및 엔도사이토시스(endocytosis)에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
또한 Beclin 1은 항바이러스 숙주 방어에도 중요한 역할을 합니다.
