- Expression increases upon DNA damage (ionizing radiation, UV, alkylating agents).
- Associated with mitochondrial localization and cell survival.
- Essential for embryogenesis and lymphocyte development (B and T cells).
- Exists as at least two isoforms: MCL1L (anti-apoptotic) and MCL1S (pro-apoptotic).
