MCL1 (Myeloid cell leukemia-1) belongs to the Bcl-2 family and plays a role in differentiation and maintenance of cell viability.
- Isoform 1 inhibits apoptosis, while isoform 2 promotes it.
- Shares sequence homology with bcl-2 at the C-terminus.
- Expression increases upon DNA damage (ionizing radiation, UV, alkylating agents).
- Associated with mitochondrial localization and cell survival.
- Essential for embryogenesis and lymphocyte development (B and T cells).
- Exists as at least two isoforms: MCL1L (anti-apoptotic) and MCL1S (pro-apoptotic).
