Target Information
Human prion protein (PrP), also known as PRNP, is a GPI-anchored cell surface glycoprotein associated with lipid raft components and functions as a signaling molecule. PrP plays a role in apoptosis, epithelial cell proliferation, and distribution of junction-associated proteins. Conversion of the normal cellular form (PrPc) into the abnormal conformer (PrPSc) is a key event in prion neurodegenerative disorders such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). PrPc is rich in α-helices, while PrPSc has higher β-sheet content and is resistant to proteinase K.
