Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. It functions as the second enzyme in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms—cytosolic and mitochondrial—differ in electrophoretic mobility, kinetic properties, and subcellular localization. Most Caucasians have both isoforms, while about 50% of Orientals have only the cytosolic form, lacking the mitochondrial isoform. This absence is associated with a higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals.
