Target Information
A reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 22 and 9 produces the Philadelphia chromosome, commonly found in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
The breakpoint on chromosome 22 occurs within the BCR gene, generating a BCR-ABL fusion protein that includes sequences from both BCR and ABL genes.
While the BCR-ABL fusion protein has been extensively characterized, the normal BCR protein’s function remains unclear.
BCR exhibits serine/threonine kinase activity and functions as a GTPase-activating protein for p21rac.
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
