Target Information

Voltage-sensitive calcium channels mediate calcium entry into excitable cells, playing a key role in neurotransmitter release and excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling.
1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs) are synthetic compounds used to identify L-type calcium channels found in muscle, neuronal, and neuroendocrine cells.
The DHP receptor, part of the L-type calcium channel complex, acts as the voltage sensor in E-C coupling and consists of at least four subunits:

• Alpha-1 subunit: contains the DHP binding site, homologous to voltage-gated sodium channels
• Alpha-2 subunit: large glycoprotein found in skeletal and cardiac muscle, brain, and other excitable tissues
• Beta and Gamma subunits: co-purify with the DHP receptor
