This gene encodes the peptide hormones calcitonin, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and katacalcin through tissue-specific alternative RNA splicing and cleavage of precursor proteins.

- Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP): Functions as a vasodilator.
- Katacalcin: Acts as a calcium-lowering peptide.
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
