Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (such as skin) and non-keratinizing cells (such as mesothelial cells).
At least 20 different CKs have been identified, generally classified into two groups:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Keratin 14 (KRT14) belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and forms a complex with keratin 5. It is a marker that distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas.
KRT14 is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
In all epithelial cells, at least one acidic and one basic keratin are expressed.
