Target Information
The G6PD gene encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, a cytosolic enzyme crucial for NADPH production. NADPH acts as an electron donor in oxidative defense and reductive biosynthesis.
G6PD exhibits high genetic diversity, with many variants caused by missense mutations leading to variable enzyme activity and clinical symptoms.
Deficiency may result in neonatal jaundice, acute hemolysis, or chronic non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
