Target Information
CD44 cell surface antigen is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and some epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Several isoforms exist, including the predominant CD44H isoform detected in many normal tissues.
CD44 acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and is involved in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. It plays roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression may be upregulated in certain carcinomas, possibly related to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high levels, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
Transcripts undergo complex alternative splicing, generating multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus. It may also be related to tumor metastasis formation.
