Target Information
AOX1 (Aldehyde oxidase 1) is a 1338-amino-acid cytoplasmic enzyme that catalyzes oxidation of various aldehydes, producing hydrogen peroxide. Under certain conditions, AOX1 can generate superoxide radicals. Abnormalities in oxygen radical metabolism have been associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease involving motor neuron death. AOX1 is highly expressed in the ventral horn of the spinal cord, and its gene is located in a chromosomal region linked to ALS2, suggesting AOX1 as a potential candidate gene for ALS2.
