Target Information
DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions and is believed to recognize the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA.
SATB2 functions as a transcription factor that regulates gene expression by binding to matrix attachment regions (MARs) and inducing local chromatin-loop remodeling.
It serves as a docking site for chromatin remodeling enzymes, recruiting corepressors (HDACs) or coactivators (HATs) directly to promoters and enhancers.
SATB2 is essential for initiating upper-layer neuron (UL1) genetic programs and repressing deep-layer neuron (DL) and UL2-specific genes, likely through modulation of BCL11B expression.
It acts as a repressor of Ctip2 and plays a regulatory role in corticocortical connections during cerebral cortex development.
Mutations in the SATB2 gene are associated with cleft palate isolated (CPI).
