HSV는 헤르페스 바이러스과(Herpesviridae)에 속하는 바이러스로, HSV-1과 HSV-2 두 가지 유형이 있습니다. 각각 인체 감염 시 구순 포진(HSV-1)과 생식기 포진(HSV-2)을 주로 유발합니다. 바이러스 입자는 이중가닥 선형 DNA 게놈을 캡시드와 외피로 둘러싼 형태를 가지며, 약 70개 이상의 ORF를 포함합니다. HSV는 알츠하이머병과의 연관성도 보고된 바 있습니다.
