Target Information
TRPV1 (Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel Subfamily V Member 1) is a receptor for capsaicin, the main pungent ingredient in hot chili peppers, and elicits a sensation of burning pain by selectively activating sensory neurons.
TRPV1 is a non-selective cation channel related to the TRP family (e.g., TRPC3, TRPC6), permeable to calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium.
It contains six transmembrane domains, a P-loop membrane domain, and three ankyrin repeat domains.
TRPV1 is activated by noxious heat and may function as a transducer of painful thermal stimuli. It mediates proton influx and may contribute to intracellular acidosis in nociceptive neurons. Expression is mainly in sensory ganglia neurons.
Four transcript variants with differences in the 5′ UTR sequence have been reported.
Diseases associated with TRPV1 include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Bladder Disease.
