Target Information

IPO11 functions in nuclear protein import as a nuclear transport receptor. It serves as a receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates and mediates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through nucleoporin binding. The complex is translocated through the pore by an energy-dependent, Ran-mediated mechanism. On the nucleoplasmic side, Ran binding causes dissociation of the complex, and importin is re-exported to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran. The directionality of nuclear import is governed by the asymmetric distribution of Ran-GTP and Ran-GDP forms between nucleus and cytoplasm. IPO11 mediates nuclear import of UBE2E3 and RPL12.
